Wilder was sub-contracted to perform USFWS protocol health assessments on desert tortoises. Lead Biologist Nate Jones participated in the translocation effort to clear the 689MW Gemini Solar site, located on approximately 7,000 acres of BLM land north of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Desert tortoises were previously located during agency protocol clearance surveys
Those animals that were found within the disturbance boundary of the solar site footprint were collected
Tortoises were then assessed for health condition and suitability for translocation
Most animals were released short distances outside the temporary perimeter exclusion fencing around the disturbance area on the site. Others were taken to a husbandry facility to over-winter, with plans to release them in following year(s)
